What is an L-Shape Desk (L-Shaped Desk)?
L-Shaped desks are popular due to the extension of a standard rectangular desk shape to include either a left-hand or right-hand return. This desk shape provides extra desktop space for either computer use with a keyboard tray, or simply extended desk space for your documents and other desktop items.
Available Floor Space
The convenience of an L-desk is that is does not really take up more space than a standard double-pedestal desk in that the return is inclusive of the rectangular (or bow-shaped desk) width, and commonly extends back an equivalent distance to your chair space behind the desk. How this works is simply due to the fact the desk width can accommodate a return — a minimum or 60"W (five feet) is recommended, as 48"W (four feet) would not allow for a return, even in the absence of a desk front pedestal, as your chair needs to fit under the desktop as well as allow for the return.
How Many Drawers?
Kneespace under a desk is important then, to allow for its proper use. Including desk drawers on either the desk or return is an allowable addition to provide storage to the desk, though others may prefer to have overdesk storage in either a closed-door hutch or open bookcase hutch, where available.
